Amazon.com Call this "The Odd Couple Goes to the White House." Jack Lemmon and James Garner play ex-presidents in this lousy comedy, each of them having served only one term as chief executive and each the other's lifelong enemy. The best jokes in the film are front-loaded into the first five minutes. We meet both men living life after the White House, one (Lemmon) making speeches for whoever will front his large fee, while the other (Garner) writes relevant books no one reads. Any time they show up at the same function, they insult each other like snarling schoolboys. It is pretty funny, but after a brief introduction My Fellow Americans goes downhill rapidly, becoming yet another stupid road movie traveled by characters who hate each other. (How many of these is Lemmon going to make?) The jokes get dumber and cruder, the actors embarrass themselves, and the whole enterprise becomes tedious. --Tom Keogh

Classic Buddy Comedy; An Under-Rated Gem, 2010-05-07 I am not a lover of dumb comedy. I don't like crude or rude and physical comedy, in general, is just not my bag. In fact, you couldn't pay me to watch ANY of the movies listed in the "frequently bought together" category by Amazon for this film. I have even been accused of being a movie snob. And yet, I truly love "My Fellow Americans," and laugh each and every time I see it, something that's pretty rare.
Maybe it's the genius combination of Garner and Lemmon, two icons of the industry (not to mention the fabulous Lauren Bacall), or maybe it's the actually quite sharp commentary on our political system, or the simply laugh-out-loud comedic timing of the two leads. "My Fellow Americans" is a buddy comedy that has far more in common with "Midnight Run," or a political satire in the spirit of "Dave," than the dreck Lemmon did with Walter Matthau.
To me, this is an undiscovered gem, with plenty of classic lines my husband and I can quote back and forth to each other that make us giggle (Bacall has most of them, e.g. "Don't say friggin'. If you're gonna' use the f-word, go for the gold.") and a good heart.
On a personal note, my now husband and I actually saw this originally, one New Year's Eve when we were newly dating. We had planned to see "Titanic" but it was so long it would have kept us in the theater past midnight. Ever since, it's become one of our sentimental favorites and we watch it every couple years and always laugh. (And, FYI, though we did, like every other person on the planet, eventually see "Titanic," and thought it was fine, I've never watched it again ... Or had any desire to.) And, at the risk of TMI, we actually took this DVD to the hospital with us when we had our son. So, yes, this movie is so cute and light-hearted I actually laughed while in labor ... And if that's not a poster-worthy blurb, I don't know what is.
Great Humor, typical Capital Hill, 2010-05-15 If has politics in it, I own it.
Garner and Lemon are great together. Good plot and action. If lost, I'd buy it again. Hollywood did good putting these two wonderful actors together. Not a second-rate movie for sure.
Fabulous, 2010-07-12 I received my item in a timely manner and it was in great shape. I give the seller a 10!
A perfect movie, 2009-12-08 This movie has it all. A twist around every corner. It pokes fun at ourselves and also gives you hope that things will be OK. Veteran actors Jack Lemmon and James Garner make a great comedy team.
"We hereby elect this one, A WINNER!", 2010-08-07 Unlike other comedies I've had the pleasure to watch in my time, this has a very special place in my heart. And that's because of my father. An active politician in his own right, his life often mirrored the general lifestyle of the characters i.e. busy, on the move and hardly ever a private moment to himself. But on one particular weekend when he was at home, he walked into the living room and MY FELLOW AMERICANS was playing on the telly. I can still recall the laughter I heard that evening as I watched him enjoy the movie. And if someone like him found it 'laugh out loud funny',
well then, 'NUFF SAID!
