Description From the director of Poltergeist and co-writer of Alien comes a thrilling sci-fi adventure of explosive action and pulse-pounding suspense. With mind-blowing special effects by OscarÂ(r) winner* John Dykstra, Lifeforce is a sci-fi extravaganza that delivers out-of-this-world excitement. A mission to investigate Halley's Comet discovers an even more fascinating phenomenon: an alien spacecraft! After a deadly confrontation, the aliens travel to Earth, where their seductive leader (Mathilda May) begins a terrifying campaign to drain the life force of everyone she encounters. Her victims, in turn, continue the cycle, and soon the entire planet is in mortal danger. And when the mission's sole survivor (Steve Railsback) sets out to destroy her, he comes face to face with the most charmingand horrifyingbeing he's ever known. Will he be able to destroy the lovely vampiress...or will he become yet another victim of her fatal charm? *1977: Visual Effects, Star Wars
Amazon.com Director Tobe Hooper was a hot property after he scored a popular hit with Poltergeist (thanks in part to producer Steven Spielberg), so his follow-up film was the most wildly ambitious of his career to date. Armed with a big budget and a special effects crew led by Star Wars pioneer John Dykstra, Hooper and Alien cowriter Dan O'Bannon whipped up a movie that must be seen to be believed. That's not really a compliment, since Lifeforce isn't much of a movie when all the sound and fury is over. But you've got to admit there's something crazily admirable about a movie that starts out as a science fiction adventure about a mission to explore Halley's comet, turns into an alien-invasion thriller featuring a beautiful naked woman (Mathilda May) who's a vampire from space, and escalates into an end-of-the-world disaster flick! It's got everything you could want from a horror movie--from zombies running amok in London to rotting corpses and energy bolts to signal the apocalypse to come! Holding it all together is Steve Railsback as the Halley mission survivor who holds the key to mankind's salvation--but what fun is saving the world when you could be seduced by a sexy naked space vampire? Check out Lifeforce to see how it all turns out. The widescreen DVD includes 15 minutes of footage not seen in U.S. theaters, an eight-page booklet of production notes and trivia, and the original theatrical trailer. --Jeff Shannon

Lifeforce, 2010-05-19 This film is not for everybody but it is a very scary vampire movie that is a drive in classic.
great widescreen film which begs for Blu-Ray definition, 2010-08-04 Lifeforce has been one of my favourite films since its cinema release and I've enjoyed watching it at least 20 times. It is stylish, engaging and highly amusing, while being graphically confronting - I love that the starving vampires self-destruct with increasing intensity. Steve Railsback has the looks, charisma and skill to be a true star in this film, but I also enjoy the performances of Peter Firth and Patrick Stewart.
The one major disappointing factor in the 2002 MGM DVD release and is that they didn't care enough to author it in 16:9 anamorphic. This edition is 4:3 letterboxed down to the cinema release aspect of 2.35:1. This means that you're getting about half of a 4:3 TV's screen space used, and that even if you can manage to configure your widescreen TV to display a correct aspect ratio with a maximum amount of screen space, you'll find the definition is really just OK (NB: a 16:9 anamorphic DVD of a 2.35:1 film would give 42% more film frame detail).
Even in 2002 it should have been obvious to MGM that 4:3 TV or computer screens were dead in the water, and that 16:9 anamorphic should have been used in all widescreen DVD releases, since they would instantly display with maximum definition and the proper aspect ratio on wide screens, and in more accurate quality when letterboxed on 4:3 screens.
Lifeforce has so much fine detail and action that it cries out to be released in maximum resolution 16:9 anamorphic Blu-Ray - which will give us at least 8 times more video detail than is possible in this 2002 4:3 letterboxed DVD. The other big attraction for Lifeforce on Blu-Ray is the magnificent surround soundtrack.
Classic Vampire Movie, 2010-06-01 This is a vampire movie with classic vampires who are driven by the need. There is no reason and there is no definition. It is all driven by the animal instinct. A vampire with a PhD is not a vampire. Com'on give me a break! This makes this movie quite scary. At the same time, this movie is very sexy, seductive, and very very bloody. The performance from the actors is not that good but the story itself is excellent. The mix of sci-fi and traditional Gothic elements are very well done in this movie.
4 stars. Must see.
Spaced Out Hooper, 2010-07-20 Lifeforce is what happens when you let Tobe Hooper loose with a fairly large budget. No, Poltergeist really doesn't count coz Hooper was on Spielberg's leash for that one. This is Hooper being Hooper, and armed with a Dan O'Bannon screenplay! We all recognize Hooper's stroke of genius when he made TCM, but you take a look at most of his body of work and we all know(yet might not care to fully admit) that he's a total schlockmeister. I don't mean that in a negative way myself because I love schlockmeisterism. In Lifeforce we get to see some big budget schlockmeisterism.
As you may or may not know or remember, it deals with a space exploration of Haley's comet that results in the bodies of three "space vampires" being brought back to London. One of them of course is a drop dead gorgeous woman who isn't afraid to parade around nude. She literally sucks people dry as she steals their lifeforce to survive. The movie is pretty much a big chase film as astronaut Railsback and other government officials try to track the naked chick down. Throw in a poised to attack spacecraft above the earth and a zombie plague in the last quarter of the film, and you have a fun and entertaining slice of sci-fi/horror nonsense that only the 80s could have given us.
This is one of three films Hooper did for Cannon, and probably the most ambitious, though I like Texas Chainsaw 2 more.
Space Vampire, 2010-03-21 Compared to other vampire movies, this one is top of the line!
Very well done.
