Description When Chicago musicians Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) accidentally witness a gangland shooting, they quickly board a southbound train to Florida, disguised as Josephine and Daphne, the twonewestand homeliestmembers of an all-girl jazz band. Their cover is perfect...until a lovelorn singer (Marilyn Monroe) falls for Josephine, an ancient playboy (Joe E. Brown) falls for Daphne, and a mob boss (George Raft) refuses to fall for their hoax! Nominated* for 6 Academy Awards(r), Some Like It Hot is the quintessential madcap farce and one of the greatest of all film comedies (The Motion Picture Guide). *1959: Director, Actor (Lemmon), Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography (B&W), Art Direction (B&W), Costume Design (B&W, winner)
Amazon.com Maybe "nobody's perfect," as one character in this masterpiece suggests. But some movies are perfect, and Some Like It Hot is one of them. In Chicago, during the Prohibition era, two skirt-chasing musicians, Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon), inadvertently witness the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. In order to escape the wrath of gangland chief Spats Colombo (George Raft), the boys, in drag, join an all-woman band headed for Florida. They vie for the attention of the lead singer, Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe), a much-disappointed songbird who warbles "I'm Through with Love" but remains vulnerable to yet another unreliable saxophone player. (When Curtis courts her without his dress, he adopts the voice of Cary Grant--a spot-on impersonation.) The script by director Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond is beautifully measured; everything works, like a flawless clock. Aspiring screenwriters would be well advised to throw away the how-to books and simply study this film. The bulk of the slapstick is handled by an unhinged Lemmon and the razor-sharp Joe E. Brown, who plays a horny retiree smitten by Jerry's feminine charms. For all the gags, the film is also wonderfully romantic, as Wilder indulges in just the right amounts of moonlight and the lilting melody of "Park Avenue Fantasy." Some Like It Hot is so delightfully fizzy, it's hard to believe the shooting of the film was a headache, with an unhappy Monroe on her worst behavior. The results, however, are sublime. --Robert Horton

Very Quick, 2010-05-22 The product is great. I bought it for my mom's birthday and was worried it might not arrive in time for me to leave and visit and low and behold it did. Very good!
Unexpected shipping, 2010-01-27 The video was what I asked for, and was in good condition. I did not realize it was being shipped from England, and hence took over 3 weeks to arrive. I will not buy from this vendor again.
What's in the heat?, 2010-06-28 A perfect product, as everyone seems to think. Marilyn lights up the sky and Curtis is magnificent, as is Lemmon. (I just read in Clive James' Cultural Amnesia that Marilyn gave the crew a hard time with her amateurish acting. You wouldn't believe it when you watch the film. James is a huge admirer of Curtis, by the way, which is fine with me.)
And yet: isn't this perfect castle based on sand, considering how dumb the story actually is? Who can really laugh about a male sax player and a male `bull fiddle' player who dress up as girls and join a girl band to hide from the mob? Or about a dumb old rich guy who insists on marrying Jack Lemmon in drag?
I remember that my admiration was limited when I watched it first, which must have been 40 years ago. Yes, lots of nice little jokes, but the main joke was always as dumb as it appears today. I watched it now again to check on other observations about the aging process of comedies. My conclusion about this one: it has not aged, it was in reality never all that great. To enjoy it fully you have to leave your common sense at the check in counter. A really satisfactory comedy does not have to be `unbelievable'. It can make do with exaggeration.
Classic Comedy Film, 2009-10-23 Classic old comedy film in the late 1950's by Billy Wilder starring Marilyn Monroe taking on cross-dressing & gender roles when such things weren't really done. They probably got away with it because it was so funny & because of the film's fast pace. It holds up very well today & is still considered one of the great comedy films of all time. A must to have.
Some Like It Hot, 2010-02-19 The DVD arrived promptly in the condition advertised. I got exactly what I expected at the cost to which I'd agreed.
