Amazon.com Product Description
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, is a next-gen experience complete with top-of-the-line graphics and surround sound designed for the Sony PlayStation 3. Featuring the most revealing display of Kojima Production's premier title, MSG4 details the world where Snake must under go his final mission. In a world overrun by private military companies (PMCs), wars are no longer fought over nations or ideologies. Instead, the wars of the future are micro-managed by overarching PMCs, right down to the bullet. New gadgets and abilities fuel Snake's journey deep into the enemy domains of the Middle East, South America, and beyond. New gear includes "Metal Gear Mk. II," the ultimate reconnaissance tool, and "Solid Eye," which gives Snake real-time information on enemies and his surroundings.

Joined by a familiar cast of characters, Snake must once again return to the battlefield to confront his lifelong rival, Liquid Ocelot, who is manipulating the world's wars from the one world where soldiers will always have a place. But Liquid Ocelot is not the only one who will be able to manipulate the world's wars--Snake can destabilize opposing forces by working behind the scenes, supporting the local militia as they fight PMCs, creating a smokescreen that allows Snake to move freely within the war-zone.

MGS4 is a next-generation adventure set in the aftermath of MGS2: Sons of Liberty. The concept behind the latest Metal Gear Solid project is "no place to hide," and this edition in the series will force Snake into unexpected circumstances with an all-new storyline that breaks away in some ways from the previous MGS franchise entries. We don't want to spoil it for you, but, producer Hideo Kojima did reveal some very juicy tidbits about the game and the storyline when it was first announced at E3 of 2006. "Until now," said Kojima, "we've released two entries of the MSX2 Metal Gear series, and three entries in the Metal Gear Solid series. Add to this Portable Ops, and you get a total of six titles. All mysteries will be cleared up in Metal Gear Solid 4."

Kojima was very clear about the finality of MSG4, leaving gamers to wonder, "Will Snake die?!" When asked if the story will come to this sort of an end, Kojima responded without the slightest bit of vagueness, "It will come to an end." The MGS4 E3 trailer showed a number of characters from the Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid histories. This final installment is sure to deliver loads of cameos, in fact, it is rumored that nearly all the characters from the series will make an appearance.

In addition to a return of classic Metal Gear Solid characters, the gameplay systems from part three are also expected to make a comeback. The camouflage system from part three will make it into MGS4, with the addition of "OctoCamo," Snake's most advanced stealth suit to date. The name appears to be formed from the words "Octopus" and "camoflauge," and players will be awestruck by the chameleon-like camo that changes with the surroundings. OctoCamo allows Snake to blend in with his environment as it digitally manifests nearby textures in real time. Think if it this way, if Snake is standing next to a wall worn out with holes, he too will appear to be riddled with holes. It has also been revealed that MGS4 will have online play, but no specifics have been released. Although very little information is known about the game's visuals, rumor has it that MGS4 is expected to be the finest representation of console graphics on the PS3, and it is expected that they will just get better and better as the game nears its release date.

First, let me say that I'm an adult in my 30's and I enjoy gaming without letting it rule my life. If you like a story you'll get a great one; brilliant depth, returning characters from older titles, and a complex story. If you want to explore, enjoy free movement non-linear gameplay, MGS4 delivers. If you don't like story but demand a great shooter with authentic weapons, you shall have it! The game has real weapons, with their real names, modeled after the actual devices, that sound like, reload like, and demonstrate stopping power like the real deal.

What is great about this game is that you are not limited in your approach to completing stages. If you wish to sneak by the game you'll have that option with 90% of the stages. If you wanna see what the weapons do you can expend the entirety of your arsenal and eliminate everyone . And if you want to challenge yourself you can endeavor for the awards at games end.

Like other games in the series the replay value is through the rafters! On the first replay I realized I left areas unexplored. The choices you make to fight with the rebels impacts the availability of the stages afterward. Those that didn't fire a shot at the power station know what I mean. What's brilliant is that the camoflage method changes just a bit with each title, I should say, improves a bit with each title. You can use the suit and hide in shadows, hide in the cardboard box, or dress like locas; giving you a pass so long as you don't attack the locas. With each replay the game is as different as you want it to be.

Online is a new experience. Some of the stages you pass in the game are here. Midtown Maelstrom (approach to advent palace), , can't think of others right now. The games are not typical capture the flag, though that's there too. You've got TDM, basic eliminate opponents to zero, and base capture games. Flat out, the best shooter, best tactical, best online, and best story that I've played on PS3. Also a better online experience than I've played on my brothers xbox with modern warfare.

Buy it, if you don't wanna fork out 25-30 bucks for a game you'll likely never sell I don't know what to tell you.

then this game is for you. If you like to sit through endless cutscenes and non-existent gameplay, then this game is for you. It does look really nice though, but it's overrated. I finished the "game" to gape at the visuals and then promptly traded it in. It's worth a rental.

Having an ipod in MGS4 is fantastic also, I do like the story and gameplay.... I still can't figure out what the square button is for.

I suppose it's obvious I am not a big fan of the series, considering how long I waited to purchase this game. But I figure anyone sitting on the fence at this point is pretty much like me, so this review is for you. MGS4 is simultaneously the most amazing and underwhelming game I have played on the PS3. It paradoxically sucks and rules, but let's go beyond that and break down what (for me) worked and what didn't. This game is incredible visually...the color pallette is a bit muted (as one would expect from this type of game), and had too many "Final Fantasy" type player models in the supporting cast for my taste, but overall oustanding graphics. The gameplay is at times interesting and varied; I particularly enjoyed the "on rails" sections. But...it does get more than a bit repetitive. Without spoiling anything, certain boss fights follow a similar pattern, and some just plain disappoint completely. Getting a load screen about every 300 feet of game area at times is more than a slight annoyance (why all PS3 devs don't just go ahead and ask Naughty Dog for lessons on how to avoid large installs and lengthy load times is beyond me). And then there are the cut scenes...holy crap, the cut scenes. Don't get me wrong, some are well done, and a few characters turn in decent performances. But mostly the scenes are overlong, overly indulgent, and just plain boring. I found the sporadic attempts at high drama and humor to be mostly just silly. The majority of reviews indicate many people really like this game, but I wonder what kind of scores it would have gotten had it not come with the Metal Gear label. I would highly recommend renting this game and playing for a few hours to decide if this one is for you!
