Before he waged war on the gods...he was forced to serve them

The third game in the God of War franchise, God of War: Chains of Olympus for PlayStation Portable is a prequel to the first two games in the series published for PlayStation 2, and true the high standards of God of War and God of War II, not only does it equal the efforts of its predecessors, in some ways it may even surpass them.

Kratos’ Story
The God of War franchise tells the tragic and violent story of the warrior Kratos and his dealings with the gods. The ancient world would eventually both praise and damn the infamous ‘Ghost of Sparta’ as the mortal who slayed a god, but long before his battle with Ares, Kratos sought absolution from his past sins by pledging himself as a champion to the gods. These brutal crusades in the name of Olympus became legendary, but would have far-reaching consequences. In Chains of Olympus Kratos is pushed to the edge as he is ordered by the gods to journey to the very depths of the underworld after the world plunges into darkness. There he must face the most feared creatures of Greek mythology and is forced to choose between his own personal redemption and saving the ancient world from certain destruction. It is a choice that will shake the immortals from their perches on Mt. Olympus.

God of War's Epic Gameplay Comes to the PSP
PlayStation Portable has always been head and shoulders above its competitors in the handheld market when it comes to processing power, and in God of War: Chains of Olympus the PSP platform may just have reached its highest level to date. Packed with features like dramatic camera angles, epic set pieces, cinematic cut scenes, stirring audio and seamless fast action gameplay, formerly only available on console platforms Chains of Olympus binds players to the game’s epic adventure, regardless where they are when they join in the action.

Combat Moves, Both Old and New
Nearly as defining as the name of Kratos itself, the trademark sweeping attack moves of the ‘Ghost of Sparta’ using his weapon of choice the ‘Blades of Chaos,’ epitomizes all God of War games and Chains of Olympus is no exception.

Although overall the PSP has fewer buttons than the PlayStation 2 controller, developer Ready at Dawn Studios has managed to incorporate nearly all of the attack moves and combination moves from previous games in the series into this new project. This continuity in gameplay not only provides a seamless intro into the game for veteran players, but a gentle learning curve for players new to the series. Add to this new brutal combat moves and an additional upgradable weapon and you have a combat system that will engage players at all levels.

Exploration and Puzzle Solving
From the bright gates of Attica to the darkest dungeons of Tartarus, Kratos’ journey and your own will take you through the dark and brutal world of Greek mythology. Here not only will your skill with the Blades of Chaos be tested, but your wits as well.

As you explore the dangers of the ancient world, players must be prepared to use their navigational skills as they press on through labyrinths of challenging puzzles. Some may be simple tests at manipulating the game’s environment to your advantage, while others much more difficult also requiring precision timing of moves, but each will be different and test you in new ways.

An Evolution in Franchise History
More than just a missing piece in the history of the God of War franchise, Chains of Olympus also serves as an evolutionary link between the origins of the God of War franchise and its future. Originally developed for PlayStation 2, the future of the franchise is slated to make its arrival on PlayStation 3 in the form of the highly anticipated God of War III in the not too distant future. Not only is PlayStation Portable designed to work in unison with PlayStation 3 in many ways, but both long-time fans and newcomers to the series who choose to watch and play Chains of Olympus carefully may very well pick up clues as to the direction the franchise will be heading in with God of War III.

Regardless, whether you find yourself playing for the current chapter in Kratos’ saga or preparing yourself for the battles to come on the PlayStation 3, God of War: Chains of Olympus is a must have title for any current owner of a PSP or those considering getting in the handheld game with one.

This is the best and beast game I ever saw on PSP. When I started to play it I did not stop until I finished it. The graphics is unbelieavable. It was the first game on PSP that I played so I thought that it was the hardware of the PSP to be so powerful but after I experimented different games not as beautiful as this, and I realized that it is this game that rises the Olympus of PSP.
It is a must.

I have never played any game in the God of War series before Chains of Olympus and let me tell you, I am hooked! Before I get to how great this game is I will briefly state its one flaw. As many other reviewers have stated, the game is far too short. I beat the game in under 3 days probably in about 8 hours of game play. The reason this is a flaw is because the game is so good that you don't want to ever stop playing!!

The controls are responsive and easy to understand. The graphics - simply the best I have seen as of yet on PSP (I am about to buy Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines which, I have been told, also has amazing graphics). The camera angles in God of War are smart and travel well through each scene. I did not find any glitches in the angles or the game itself. Also the soundtrack is excellent. The music can get your heart racing and peaks at the appropriate times. As for the gameplay, it is pure fun from beginning to end. The creators do a great job of mixing fighting with puzzles that are not overly complicated but require some thought. I did not find the puzzles to slow down gameplay too much, just enough in my opinion.

If you are a PSP owner, you need this game. It may be a quick play but you'll enjoy every minute of it. Absolutely worth the $15 pricetag on Amazon. The game is so good that I am seriously considering getting a PS3 when God of War III comes out later this year! Buy it and you won't be sorry.

I play PC games. Console games generally do not interest me. I tried this on a whim and WOW! it is actually fun. Interesting. challenging. If I owned an up to date console I would buy the other God of War games if they are this good.

Probably the best game on the psp. The controls are good, graphics are pretty good, and the killing is excellent as always. Buy this game if you haven't already, especially at the price it is at now.

Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5 WOW! What a Great Game!, 2010-02-24
I've been a gamer for a long long time. For decades I was a PC gamer, and I still am to an extent. My wonderful, beautiful, and thoughtful wife gave me a PSP last year for my birthday. Never having used or played any of the consoles, I was unfamiliar with the controls, but I liked the idea of the portability of the PSP. I played the two Tomb Raider games that are available, and enjoyed them enough. I also played Indiana Jones - Staff of Kings, and liked that as well. But after that I found myself starving for something to play, and raided my sons room on a clean up spree. He had Untold Legends, so I played it. I loved that game a lot, it was right up my alley, and nice and long so it took forever to play through. Upon completing that game twice, once as a knight and once as a druid, I again found myself starving for something good to play. So I started some research, and came across God of War with all of its outstanding reviews. As long as the character control was totally analog stick I was good to go.

I have just completed my first run through this great game. WOW, the only thing I can say is that all of the positive reviews were dead on. Outstanding graphics, breathtaking panoramas, perfect art work, superb music score, outstanding sound affects, and absolutely perfect character control and camera angles & control. The folks at Edios should take a lesson on the character control and camera angles & control from these developers. I'm not going to go into great detail here as there is already enough of that on the net. I'm just going to say that I've not had more enjoyment out of playing a game before, and it deserves to be said so all can see. I was taken in by all of the sensual goodies built perfectly into this game. The scenes, artwork, sounds, play action, all just fit together so perfectly. Game play was challenging, yet forgiving where it needed to be. The designers didn't decide to play games and make already difficult areas and actions that much harder with bad controls, and camera angles. If your not familiar with these type of console controls, play on Easy mode first and get used to them. I'm still rusty and found myself hitting incorrect buttons during most of the mini-games. I will improve with time. The only real challenge for me was the final boss fight. Naturally its supposed to be tough, but my inability to work the controls well played against me for a while. Eventually, I got it, obviously, and was able to beat the game. One thing that I absolutely LOVED about this game besides the outstanding character control, and camera angles was the fact that if you died during a difficult part, instead of taking you back to the last save point, it took you back to your last checkpoint during that event. So for example, if you were doing the last boss fight and got to the point like I did where your half way through and died, when you restarted, you were at the beginning of that particular part of the boss battle, you didn't have to go back and start from the beginning. An excellent way to design the game. Thank You!

Of course the game has more playability as once you beat it on any of the lower difficulty levels, you unlock God mode and that gives you three more levels again to play, plus you start unlocking challenges which are sort of mini-levels. I cannot wait to get back into the fray on the next levels and see how I do.
