The 10th Kingdom [VHS]

Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Scott Cohen, John Larroquette, Dianne Wiest, Daniel Lapaine
Director: David Carson, Herbert Wise
This epic 10-hour miniseries from the Emmy-winning writer of Gulliver's Travels was a ratings bust on television, but on video and DVD, where it can be enjoyed at one's leisure, it has a better chance to cast its magical spell. Kimberly Williams has never been more enchanting than as Virginia, a waitress who still lives with her janitor father (John Larroquette) and yearns for something exciting to happen to her. Her wish comes true when she and her father are transported from New York City into a dimension that, with apologies to Rod Serling, can only be called the Fairy Tale Zone; nine kingdoms populated by characters from fairy tales of yore. They team up with a dog who's really a prince--Wendell, grandson of Snow White--changed into canine form by the evil Queen (Dianne Wiest),...

In His Life - The John Lennon Story [VHS]

Rated: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Staring: Philip McQuillan Phoenix, Blair Brown, Christine Kavanagh, Gillian Kearney, Daniel McGowan
Director: David Carson
Helped along by an unprecedented access to John Lennon's boyhood homes, schools, and sundry haunts, In His Life: The John Lennon Story has a ghostly appeal that makes one feel a bit like a voyeur on pop history. Focusing on eight years of Lennon's youth, from ages 16 to 24, In His Life stars Irish actor Philip McQuillan in the lead and dramatizes much of the familiar lore: John's abandonment by his father; the double loss of his mother, Julia (Blair Brown), first to another family and then to a random accident; his historic introduction to Paul McCartney (Daniel McGowan) at St. Peter's Church Hall; and his too-early marriage to his first wife, Cynthia (Gillian Kearney). As often happens in Lennon hagiographies, the arc of the Beatles' story and career feels weirdly ...

The Children of Tama are a mysterious, rarely encountered race whose language is indecipherable even by the Universal Translator. This is because Tamarians speak in metaphor, which is strange and poetic, but, without a frame of reference, also gibberish. After yet another failed attempt at communication, the Tamarians take drastic measures: they kidnap Picard and beam him to the surface of a hostile planet along with their own captain. What follows is an interesting, well-acted story of the struggle to understand.

Don't be put off by the premise. "Darmok" is one of the best episodes of TNG. It's action-packed and holds its own next to "The Best of Both Worlds, Part I," "Time's Arrow," and "Descent." Thanks to Joe Menosky's brilliant teleplay and Paul Winfield's solid acting, thi...

Star Trek - The Next Generation, Episode 163: Parallels [VHS]

Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: LeVar Burton, Gates McFadden
Director: LeVar Burton, Gates McFadden, Gabrielle Beaumont, Robert Becker, Cliff Bole
This intriguing episode from the seventh and last season of the series focuses on Worf (Michael Dorn), who has become trapped in a quantum fissure where numerous, alternate universes intersect. Bouncing uncontrollably from one reality to another, Worf variously finds himself married to Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), promoted to First Officer under the command of Captain Riker (Jonathan Frakes), and working with Cardassian crewmates while fending off warlike Bajorans. There's also a version of the Enterprise that did not survive being picked apart by the Borg--for that matter, neither did Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) make it through the Borg experience alive. The whole show is a field day of what-ifs, and Dorn is excellent at conveying a sense of helplessness, albeit Klingon-style....

Star Trek - The Next Generation, Episode 158: Phantasms [VHS]

Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: LeVar Burton, Gates McFadden
Director: LeVar Burton, Gates McFadden, Gabrielle Beaumont, Robert Becker, Cliff Bole
In his effort to experience what it's like to be human, Data has installed a program to simulate dreams, but the program seems to have gone on the fritz. He keeps having nightmares and oversleeping. In his dreams, there's a hole in one of the ship's walls that early 20th-century miners are maliciously opening with their pickaxes, followed by a high-pitched whine. They notice Data and begin to disassemble him. In later dreams he sees Worf eating a piece of cellular peptide cake (with mint frosting), Dr. Crusher drinking from a straw coming out of Commander Riker's head, and himself being forced to cut a piece of cake made out of Counselor Troi, who screams when the knife enters her frosted shoulder. To solve this dilemma, he goes to the holodeck to talk to Sigmund Freud. Over in "...

Staring: LeVar Burton, Gates McFadden
Director: LeVar Burton, Gates McFadden, Gabrielle Beaumont, Robert Becker, Cliff Bole
When the Enterprise detects a foreign object floating in space, a relatively primitive probe of some sort, the crew members are surprised when a beam of energy is able to penetrate their shields. Before they know it (and before the credits), Captain Picard is knocked down and psychically linked to the probe through the beam. In Picard's head, he is on a desert planet where everybody thinks he is Kamin, a man recovering from a fever, even his wife. He quickly ascertains that he is not in a holodeck program, that he's not a prisoner, that there is no way to find--much less contact--the Enterprise, and that everybody thinks he is nuts for believing he is a starship captain. On the bridge, Dr. Crusher and company are trying to understand the beam's effect on Picard, while on...
