great sound, poor quality, 2010-01-28 Have owned these earphones for 3 years. While the sound is great the hardware quality is suspect. The cords have been replaced on two occasions and one of the earpieces now has very low volume. Ultimate ears informed me that they don't repair their product but will sell me a new pair abiet for a 50% per cent discount + 15.00 shipping.
The earphones original cost was over $200.00, one would expect better quality and endurance for that price. These earphones were treated with kid gloves .
If you don't mind replacing expensive earphones every couple years go for these, the sound is great.
The company Ultimate Ears uses for its first line of defense from customers is worthless. Go straight to corporate
with problems, which you will have.
$200.00 + for 3 years is not a very good cost to benefit ratio.
prone to failure, 2010-03-08 These sound terrific -- until they fail. See numerous other reviews here along these lines.
Within a few months of receiving these earphones, the wiring, visible beneath the clear insulation of the cords, began to turn green with oxidation or corrosion at the endpoints and near junctures. The earphones themselves sounded fine however, and I didn't mind as long as the product's performance was not affected. Fast forward to nearly two years later however, and the sound began cutting out intermittently due to a deteriorating electrical connection where the cord is soldered at a right angle to the jack. Although I can manipulate the cord to produce a connection good enough to work, the slightest motion of the cord is enough to cause it to cut out again. And it's only getting worse.
By now, the product is out of warranty. Despite there being known quality issues with these products, as evidenced in these reviews, they will just tell you, "Too bad. How about a discount on a new pair?" Well, for almost $300, there are comparable products available without this track record for poor quality and I'm not inclined to throw good money after bad and risk another such failure once the warranty expires from a company that won't stand by its products.
If you read other reviews, you'll see that even when the product is covered under warranty, folks seem to be dissatisfied with the quality of the service they received. I wasn't impressed with my interactions with their support. It was slow and took over two weeks of back and forth correspondence, and the Logitech web site for it is buggy and works poorly.
To summarize: nice while it lasts, but prone to failure. When it does fail, you will deal with poor support, but may be invited to repeat your unsatisfactory experience, albeit perhaps at a discount.
Great sound, wonder about construction quality, 2010-01-20 I am sad to say that my UE phones just broke. I used them almost daily for 8 months--at work, at the gym, on long flights. The sound quality of these headphones is actually quite good, but the right earpiece just fell apart. I was very gentile when using these phones, especially considering they were $180+! While the sound quality is good, I would think for the price they should last longer.
Very Poor contruction., 2010-01-11 I have bought UE Superfi 5 Pro and have only used them while I commute to work (2-3 hours) and treated very carefully. My first cord broke in about 3 month. Then the earphone itself broke as well shortly after.
The replacement came, and the cords again broke within 2-3 month period. I believe I went through about 3-4 cords before the warranty period was over(1 year). After that, I was forced to buy them for $28 (including shipping).
I am now on my third one that I have paid out of my pocket and the current one just recently broke as well. Same problem, the connection inside the plug jacket is somehow loose and the sound is going in and out as I walk around. I called their customer support(I believe her name was Alex) and she basically told me there are no warranty on the replacement cords that they charged $28.
And for clarification she said, even if it breaks after few days of normal usage, the cords cannot be returned for replacement. If their product is this fragile, and no warranty on the replacement parts, basically these earphone have life of 1 year. Unless you dish out $100 for every year for a $300-400 earphones. I think there is something wrong in that.
So it gets 1 star for me. I wish the reviewers of the UE products were more clear about this point. I would not have bought mine if I knew.
Useless to say, I will never buy/recommend Ultimate Ear's product regardless how good they sound. What good is the earphone if I cannot use them?
Sound great while they work. Shoddy build., 2010-02-06 I've purchased this model twice. Each time, they had to be replaced under warranty.
This means: Bought first time, broke, got replaced by warranty, broke, out of warranty, bought a second time (in Red), broke, got replaced by warranty (in Black, they no longer had Red), broke. Not falling apart, mind you, but the high or low freqs no longer playing or the like. Seems it was always the right earpiece with the problem. A couple cables went out with a loose connection at the connector jack, too.
All in all, that means I've owned four sets of this model.
So after having four sets and most of them breaking in less than a year, I'm not all to impressed nor inclined to buy anything from this company, again. I received the 50% discount offer since my current set is out of warranty, but why bother?
I have some older high end Sony earbuds I paid for half the price and they've lasted for many years and came with a longer warranty. What gives?
For the price, I expect them to last much, much longer than they do.
